Dr. Alan M. Atlas earned his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, where he currently serves as Clinical Professor in the Department of Preventive and Restorative Sciences. As co-director of the Endodontic-Restorative Microscopy and Technology Clinic, Dr. Atlas instructs on precision restorative dentistry using the dental microscope and digital technologies. While actively involved in clinical research studies for implants and dental materials, Dr. Atlas also heads up a busy private practice in Philadelphia where he and his team provide esthetic and comprehensive restorative dentistry with an emphasis on service and quality of care.

Dr. Atlas also serves on the editorial board of several journals, and he is an internationally recognized lecturer whose unique academic and private practice perspective focuses on applying scientific-based protocols to general and advanced clinical dentistry. Dr. Atlas has long recognized Komet’s tremendous reputation for superior diamond instruments. In his combined experiences—both teaching at Penn and treating patients in his practice—he’s learned first-hand that Komet diamonds are exceptionally well-made and effective, and he relies on them every day.

    Favorite Komet USA Product

In practicing restorative and adhesive dentistry, Dr. Atlas turns to numerous Komet instruments on a regular basis, and he has worked with the company to create sequenced, step-by- step kits to facilitate a variety of techniques. He selects configurations for direct-composite preparations and finishing, which he describes as the backbone of many practices. Dr. Atlas recognizes that preparation is critical to achieving an optimal outcome, and he emphasizes the necessity of using high-quality, predictably precise instruments to ensure success. Click here for Dr. Atlas's kits.

To achieve unmatched precision in margins, Dr. Atlas favors Komet USA’s sonic finishing handpiece and tips. He notes the importance of high-quality chairside and lab kits, particularly considering the growth of CAD-CAM ceramic restorations.

    The Future of Dentistry

“I designed these kits because CAD-CAM restorations are becoming a significant part of our practice, so precision becomes even more important. With the CAD-CAM, preparation is key to success. If you do not have a good prep, the outcomes can fail: you cannot get a good scan or good milling if the preparation is not perfect. I design kits to sequence the preparation so the end results are optimal.”

See what Dr. Bilski has to say about virtual dental appointments during the COVID-19 outbreak here.

A 1988 graduate of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, Dr. Thomas Bilski has been in private practice for 29 years. During that time, he has devoted himself to furthering his education, successfully expanding his expertise in a variety of dental disciplines. He currently is Co-Director of the Midwest Implant Institute (Mii) in Columbus, OH. He has published numerous clinical articles, and his is a frequent name on the lecture circuit where he educates on implant and cosmetic dentistry.

In outfitting his practice for a full complement of dental services, Dr. Bilski repeatedly turns to Komet for the exceptional quality of the instruments. He also describes Komet customer service as “second to none”: every member of the support team works diligently to ensure customers receive personal attention in a timely manner.

    Favorite Komet USA Product

While he relies on a full range of Komet instruments in his daily practice, Dr. Bilski identifies the F360™ endodontic rotary system and the DentinPost® X coated glass-fiber post as some of his favorites. For endodontic care, Dr. Bilski searched for the perfect combination of safety and simplicity, and he found it with Komet USA. He describes the instruments as exceptionally efficient, which makes cutting effortless.

    The Future of Dentistry

“Dentistry—and restorative dentistry in particular—is increasingly moving toward digital work flow. Computers will lead the way for provisional and definitive dental restorations as well as for dental-implant placement. Radiographic and virtual intraoral impressions will be the standard modality, and dental services will be easier to deliver, shortening chair time to benefit both the dentist and the patient.”

After earning degrees from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry (2010) and University of Tennessee Orthodontics (2013), Dr. Kyle Fagala opened Saddle Creek Orthodontics, where he combines cutting-edge treatment with personalized care to deliver beautiful smiles every day.

Dr. Fagala was introduced to Komet USA during his orthodontics residency, where he found himself relying on a range of Komet burs and discs. When outfitting his new practice, Dr. Fagala joined a study club/buying group and was pleased to see the familiar Komet logo on its list of providers. While it was a natural progression to carry on with the Komet instruments he’d used during residency, Dr. Fagala continues to choose Komet for its range of high-quality instruments paired with the company’s knowledgeable, supportive, and accessible team members.

As an orthodontist, Dr. Fagala uses rotary discs on a daily basis, and he has found a new favorite: Komet USA’s DISCtance IPR system has become a staple in his practice. Dr. Fagala relies on the system to attain optimal results, particularly in older patients with significant gingival recession. He uses the discs to minimize black triangles and also for incisal enameloplasty or manicuring, which he performs on nearly every patient who completes orthodontic treatment in his practice.

    The Future of Orthodontics

“Intraoral scanning and 3D printing have the potential to change our industry, as we move ever closer to in-house digital planning of tooth movement and printing of clear aligners. Soon we’ll be able to print labial and lingual brackets on IDB jigs in-office and same-day. Naturally, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of these systems will ultimately determine their relevance, but the technology is definitely moving forward. In addition, corporate dentistry will continue to affect the practice of orthodontics, as fewer dentists will refer outside their networks and more orthodontists will establish working relationships with DSOs. Orthodontic fees may drop as the perceived value of treatment lowers in response to direct-to- consumer offerings, so orthodontists should find ways to reduce their overhead—specifically in terms of supply expenditures—and share space with other specialists.”

A natural artist, Dr. Sivan Finkel majored in art while fulfilling pre-dentistry requirements as an undergraduate at Tulane University. He continues to combine his two passions at The Dental Parlour, his practice in New York City, providing general dentistry with a focus on esthetics. Before entering private practice, Dr. Finkel earned his DMD from the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine and completed a year-long residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital followed by two years of esthetic-dentistry training at New York University’s College of Dentistry.

In addition to his private practice, Dr. Finkel served as the Education Director of NYU College of Dentistry's Advanced Esthetics continuing-education program (2013-17) and is currently an adjunct clinical instructor at NYU's Advanced Program for International Dentists in Esthetic Dentistry. He has been featured as a dental expert on The Dr. Oz Show, Fox News, and the Today Show and has had his work showcased in Allure magazine. Dr. Finkel lectures regularly to local and international dental audiences and was a co-author of the recently published textbook, "Essentials of Esthetic Dentistry: Smile Design Integrating Esthetics and Function."

Dr. Finkel opts for Komet instruments because they last longer than other brands he’s used. He also appreciates Komet’s commitment to innovation that provides him with new solutions to different clinical situations. On a personal note, he adds that Komet’s sales representatives are extremely knowledgeable and supportive.

    Favorite Komet USA Product

Dr. Finkel worked with Komet USA to develop a customized veneer block that allows him to efficiently move through the veneer preparation, temporization, and cementation sequence precisely as he desires.

    The Future of Dentistry

Dr. Finkel envisions dental treatment as moving toward being guided and digitally planned, where he can "measure twice and cut once," comprehensively pre-planning each stage of a case before ever touching the patient, thus leaving very little room for error and eliminating the possibility of surprises once treatment is initiated. He states, “This will increase patient comfort about undergoing irreversible procedures and improve the predictability of the treatments we are delivering. This is especially crucial in my world of esthetic dentistry because beauty is subjective, and we have to make sure what we are planning to deliver is actually in line with the patient's esthetic goals.”

    Favorite Komet USA Product

There is nothing better than natural tooth structure and thankfully with today’s restorative materials we can be incredibly conservative and preserve as much natural tooth structure as possible.  The challenging part is to precisely prepare tooth structure so we can blend conservation with appropriate material thickness.  To help accomplish this, one of my favorite products by Komet is the PrepMarkers Starter Set.  This set has calibrated burs ranging from 0.5 mm to 2.0 mm to guide precise preparation.  I personally find myself using the 1.0 mm PrepMarker the most.  This allows me to place bonded ceramic partial coverage preparations with minimal tooth reduction.

    Future of Dentistry:

I believe dentistry will continue to evolve and will be influenced by things such as artificial intelligence and augmented reality.  The important part we need to remember is while technology can open up new worlds of care, we still need to have an analog aspect of human empathy.  True care for our patients is dependent upon our proper lifelong learning and treating the patient as an individual.

    Favorite Komet USA Product
My favorite Komet products are the Q-Finishers and One Step Composite polishers. The combination of the two products are integral to the simplified polishing steps for creating the mirror finish on my injection overmolded composite restorations. This mirror finish is critical for biofilm, stain, and abrasion resistant restorations. The porcelain-like finish gives clinicians and patients confidence in choosing direct additive solutions as an alternative to subtractive indirect restorations.

    The Future of Dentistry
The advances in our profession have enabled us to treat patients and challenging clinical conditions like never before. As a profession, we've been relying too heavily on tooth replacement. We have benefited, however, from continued improvements in dental materials and have gained historical perspective from outcomes of more aggressive treatment options. I believe the pendulum is swinging back to earlier diagnosis and intervention as well as more conservative treatment options with the patients' lifelong health and quality of life in mind. I enjoy pushing the limits with direct composite options and engaging colleagues in discussions to rethink our traditional treatment analogs.

Dr. Ortiz began his journey into the dental profession in 2002 after graduating from one of the few two-year ADA-accredited programs for dental technology. Over the next eight years, he worked full-time as a dental laboratory technician and studied full-time, earning a Bachelor of Science degree, with honors, in biochemistry from California State University at Los Angeles. He then was recruited to Harvard School of Dental Medicine where he won the Leo Talkoy Award for excellence in clinical dentistry and earned his Doctorate of Dental Medicine, (DMD).

While completing his residency in prosthodontics at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Dr. Ortiz reconnected with a mentor who offered him a position in a well-regarded Boston-area dental practice. A surgically trained prosthodontist, he is dedicated to the delivery of high-quality care in a wide range of treatments. A member of the American College of Prosthodontics and the American Dental Association, Dr. Ortiz is a passionate advocate for excellence in prosthodontics as well as implant, cosmetic, and reconstructive dentistry.

In collaboration with Quintessence Publishing, Dr. Ortiz’s book, Lit: The Simple Protocol for Dental Photography in the Age of Social Media, was released worldwide in June 2019.

His passion for teaching and advancing dental education led him to found DentLit, an organization dedicated to highlighting best practices where the art and science of dentistry intersect. DentLit is a place where evidence- based dentistry flourishes, allowing users to find answers to common dental questions.

In addition to his courses on dental photography, Dr. Ortiz also leads several annual conferences and conducts dental-related courses of his own. In his popular course, “Adhesive Reconstruction and Tooth Preparations,” he demonstrates his preparation techniques and instruments.

    The Future of Dentistry

“We are witnessing the growth of group practices and corporate dentistry, as they take a larger foothold within the dental-healthcare industry; therefore, solo and small-group practices with two to three doctors will strive to become more efficient in the way we deliver services.”

A 2011 graduate of Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, Dr. Leora Walter completed her graduate prosthodontics and implant dentistry residency at New York Hospital Queens in 2015. She has received numerous honors, including the American Academy of Implant Dentistry Award, the
Quintessence Award for Research Achievement, the NIH Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholarship, and the International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs Scholarship. Dr. Walter has spent time in Ethiopia teaching clinicians how to recognize oral manifestations of HIV and
in Peru conducting extensive research into head and neck cancers, and she has authored numerous clinical articles and lectures internationally.

Dr. Walter consistently turns to Komet USA for her instrument needs. She credits her Komet rep, Martha LoBosco, for introducing her to a world of superior dental burs, and she compliments Martha’s extraordinary knowledge and willingness to go “above and beyond.” Dr. Walter recalls a time when she needed a specific bur for a case, but there was no way it would arrive in time from Komet’s headquarters in Lemgo, Germany. “Somehow, she shares, “Martha got hold of the product and made sure I would have it in advance of the surgery. That’s why I choose Komet USA.”

While she relies on a variety of Komet instruments in her daily practice, Dr. Walter is particularly fond of Komet’s polishing burs for acrylics. She describes them as exceptionally easy to use and relates how these burs significantly simplify her life by offering a one-step polishing procedure.

    The future of dentistry

“Dentistry is continually evolving, which is one of the reasons why I love it so much. You really need to stay on top of the changes just to meet the status quo. We are seeing increasing numbers of zirconia restorations, but many clinicians lack important knowledge about the effect they have on the opposing dentition. Proper polishing is key to making sure that zirconia restorations do not prove detrimental to the opposing dentition.”

After graduating from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry (1996), Dr. Christian Yaste completed a two-year residency program in Oral Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. He founded the Ballantyne Center for Dentistry and Dental Implants in 2001 with his business partner, Dr. Joseph Hufanda. In their adults-only practice, the doctors focus on Sedation, Cosmetic, and Implant Dentistry. Over the last two years, the practice has been growing rapidly around the “All-on- 4” implant procedure in which the patient receives an implant-retained overdenture or hybrid appliance instead of traditional dentures.

Dr. Yaste is a frequent contributor to dental periodicals, sharing his expertise with readers around the world. He also presents courses and works with industry personnel to advance the practice of dentistry. In maintaining the high standards he’s set for his practice, Dr. Yaste outfits his operatory with a range of Komet products, citing their high quality and asserting that there’s a Komet instrument for every need he has. He continues to use Komet instruments daily because, quite simply, they work well while increasing his efficiency, enabling him to provide his patients with exceptional dental care.

The H379G.FG.023 egg-shaped carbide has found a permanent place in Dr. Yaste’s toolkit. This golden-shanked workhorse is unmatched in its ability to cut the chimneys off of hybrid prostheses without generating heat; heat causes fatigue to the internal workings of the hybrid prosthesis and in turn can lead to fractures. Since incorporating this Komet bur into his technique, Dr. Yaste has not had a single appliance fracture. Click here for Dr. Yaste's kit.

    The Future of Dentistry

“For me personally, I plan on continuing my clinical practice but increasingly limiting my time to procedures that are dental-implant related and working with the edentulous population. I also aim to spend more time in speaking engagements and consulting. For dentistry in general, implant-retained overdentures and hybrid fixed appliances are going to continue to grow in popularity and, I believe, become the treatment of choice for the Baby Boomer generation, who did not grow up with the dental advantages or sophistication that following generations have had. This is the future of dentistry for that generation, so this procedure will remain very popular for the next 15 to 20 years and possibly beyond. Centers are popping up all around the country, with more in the works, and more and more courses on the procedure are being held.”
